Slimcontrol 0.3 - Control your Squeezebox with a Dashboard widget

Here's a dashboard widget i've been working on.

I wanted a way to control my Squeezebox from the mac dashboard and found the Slimcontrol widget. With changes to slimserver (and maybe OSX) since it was last maintained quite a few things didn't work but luckily the author GPLed it when he stopped working on it so I fixed the bits that weren't working and added display of cover art, plus the "cd player" look :-)

I am using SlimServer Version 6.5.0 and OSX 10.4.8 - if you have problems please state your versions.

Download from the google code project page.

If you can't get it to work with cauth (I couldn't) then you can get it to work by switching cauth off in your slimserver preferences.

There are still some things that could be improved and some bugs I noticed.

Known bugs:
If the dashboard hasn't been shown for a while it can lose connection to the server.

Todo:
Style the volume slider - i've trawled the documentation and failed to find a way to do it, the alternative is a DHTML replacement which would make a round knob possible :-)
FYI
I found that this widget had some problems when using
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Linux - EN - iso-8859-1

I was able to get it running by changing all "/SlimControl/status.xml" occurrences to "/xml/status.xml" in the slimcontrol.js file. After that the widget had problems with the cover art, at which point I changed
port +getElementTextNS("","cover", items[0], 0)
to
port +getElementTextNS("","coverart", items[0], 0)

All is honky dory now.

Hi Daz,
I am glad you picked it up and continued what I started a long time ago. Bravo!

Hi Sune,
Skinning it isn't that difficult if you know HTML and CSS, you can get access to the files that comprise the widget by right clicking in Finder and choosing show package contents.

I have already planned to create a skin similar to that you mention but couldn't resist trying to create one that looked like a CD player first :-)

Ability to change songs would be great I agree and I will have a look at this when I can.

OK, it works :-) I had to install the HTML code inside the prefpane (seems to be an issue with certain versions of the SlimServer), and then I needed to realise that I need to connect to the HTML port, not the CLI port (9000, not 9090). And then it works.

I use it as a stand-alone app through AmnestySingles. I like the concept of having a small no-frills control app for adjusting volume etc. w/o using the web-interface.

Is it possible to skin this little thing by myself? I would love to have a larger cover + less CD-like (and less space-consuming) controls...actually I'd prefer something like the 0.2 version with the ability to show the CD cover (nice feature :-).

I would also love it to be extended with some kind of ability to change Album/artist/playlist. I currently use the SlimRemote.jar for this, but it's a slow start-up.

As a curiousity I can mention that version 0.2 now also seems to display track info etc. correctly. Do not know if this is due to your code or if it's the 6.5.2 version of the server that fixed some kind of bug related to this...

Keep up the good work!

Hey, this sounds good. I use the old widget (actually compiled it to a stand-alone with AmnestySingles), and look forward to try this one out.

Kind regards
